College Spotlight: Baylor University

Pittsburgh

College Spotlight is a very short introduction to a college/university, with some fun and interesting highlights I've gathered during tours, meetings with admission staff, webinars, and research.

Hopefully these College Spotlight posts will help you determine whether a school could be a good fit and warrants additional research.

Baylor University
Baylor University

Baylor is a mid-sized, Christian university in Waco, Texas.

Here are some quick highlights:

  • Baylor has a very strong Christian identity and is affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas. While all faith backgrounds are welcome, the majority of students identify as Christian.

  • For fans of Chip & Joanna Gaines, many of the small businesses in "Fixer Upper" are nearby. In fact, Magnolia Market is just down the street from Baylor.

  • Baylor is an R1 Research University, meaning it has the highest level of research activity.

  • About 30% of students are involved in fraternities and sororities.

McLane Stadium at Baylor University

  • School spirit is huge here, especially around D1 football. Most college tours at Baylor even include time on the football field!

  • Housing is guaranteed and required for first-year students. Professors live in each residence hall.

  • Baylor strongly recommends including a thorough expanded resume as part of the college application.

Dr. Pepper was invented in Waco, TX
  • While regional admission reps do not read applications, they do advocate for students- so it's wise for students to get to know their regional rep.

  • Most students are accepted in the Early Decision/Early Action round.

  • Both the FAFSA and CSS financial aid forms are requested by Baylor. Merit awards are announced alongside acceptance. Additional scholarship opportunities are available as well.

  • Fun fact: Dr. Pepper was invented in Waco! Every Tuesday, Baylor hosts "Dr. Pepper Hour" and provides free Dr. Pepper floats to students.
