College Spotlight is a very short introduction to a college/university, with some fun and interesting highlights I've gathered during tours, meetings with admission staff, webinars, and research.
Hopefully these College Spotlight posts will help you determine whether a school could be a good fit and warrants additional research.
The University of Alabama has landed on a lot of college lists across the country, partly because their outstanding merit awards often make the cost of attendance lower than students' in-state flagship universities. Roll Tide!
Here are some quick highlights about the University of Alabama:
The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa is a R1 institution (top tier of research activity).
You may have heard of two other University of Alabama campuses, but they are actually separate universities:
University of Alabama at Birmingham, which is well-known for nursing
University of Alabama at Huntsville, which is well-known for aerospace engineering
Almost 60% of the student population at Bama is comprised of out-of-state and international students.
Each year, Bama is one of the most popular homes for National Merit Scholars, in part because of the outstanding merit aid, robust honors and scholars programs, research/co-op/internship opportunities, and campus resources and amenities.
"The Strip" is an area walkable from campus that is a popular gathering place for students, filled with restaurants, shops, bars, and other entertainment.
Yes, football is huge at the University of Alabama. But Bama also boasts multiple repeat championships in many other areas including NASA Lunabotics and Women's Wheelchair Basketball.
Despite the impression you may have from TikTok, about 2/3 of the student body does NOT participate in the Greek system. If you're interested in Greek life, opportunities abound, and yes, some are very involved. If you're not interested, keep in mind that there are around 600 student organizations to join.
The Birmingham airport is relatively small but just under an hour away. The Atlanta airport is about three hours away.
Alabama may be a good fit for students who like a large campus and student population and who don't mind hot, humid weather.
