College Spotlight is a very short introduction to a college/university, with some fun and interesting highlights I've gathered during tours, meetings with admission staff, webinars, and research.
Hopefully these College Spotlight posts will help you determine whether a school could be a good fit and warrants additional research.
The University of Pittsburgh has become increasingly popular in recent years. Its fun urban location, close proximity to the airport, and strong academic offerings have garnered the attention of more and more out-of-state students each year.
Here are some quick highlights:
Pittsburgh is a mid-sized city surrounded by three rivers. It boasts fun restaurants and cultural activities, and has a bustling vibe.
The downtown area is home to several other higher education institutions including Carnegie Mellon University and Duquesne University.
Several medical systems, including the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the Allegheny Medical Network are located in the area, providing lots of opportunities to students in medical-related majors.
Despite the urban location, Pitt definitely has a campus feel with a lot of green spaces.
Though Pitt is a public university, there is a chapel as well as a cathedral on campus. The chapel is nondenominational and the cathedral is actually secular. The cathedral offers many study areas and themed "International Rooms" that can be reserved.
Pitt offers a wide variety of majors and Guaranteed Admission Programs (GAP) in multiple disciplines for students interested in advancing their education beyond a bachelor's degree.
Pitt has Rolling Admission. Applying early is recommended, considering the popularity of the school in recent years.
After application submission, students will be prompted to complete the Self-Reported Academic Record (SRAR), a third-party platform to report courses and grades.
Housing is guaranteed for 3 years, and dorms are selected on a lottery system.
A full-scale model of a dorm room can be viewed in the bookstore.
Some, but not all, dorms have air conditioning.
Sororities and fraternities do not have houses, but do have designated dorms.
Pitt can be a great fit for students interested in a mix of traditional campus life, city amenities, academic challenge, and professional opportunities.
